losing torque

Alright, so in the past 3 weeks I've been losing serious torque in my 94 automatic 3.4.

Of course, I'm hoping it's not the transmission going so if anybody has any ideas of things to check, please let me know.

Here's some quick info:
1) comes and goes - sometimes flooring results in engine rev and slow takeoff - other times, i can roast 'em.
2) replaced transmission fluid - little to no effect.
3) have a disappearing check engine code but haven't been able to pull it yet - it disappears every time i want to check it.
4) smog test says emissions is bad but i haven't looked too much into that yet.

Anyone?

RE: losing torque

Does the check engine light blink a few times before it going solid? Sounds like a misfire. If it has been awhile, I would change plugs and wires. Or just check plugs for fouling, and wires for burns and to make sure they are snug.

RE: losing torque

Na, it's not in the ignition. I've replaced everything there recently.

I'm really fearing either transmission or rear diff....

Mostly because it doesn't do it at all in reverse.

Also if I floor it and it won't grab in first, second hits and BAM! I'm gone.

Any ideas of other things to look at first would be MOST appreciated.
