Have to remove the fuel rail, upper and lower intake and valve covers to get to them. If you still have the rear lift bracket on the passenger side, the valve cover bolt that is under it can be a PITA.

thanks guys for all the help and replys.. I pulled tht oil filter and it was half full of sludge.. i got the oil pan off and the pick up tube was almost full of sludge. At that time i desided to pull the motor because of fear the oil passages would be in the same shape. I got the motor out ( this was an experiance) and took it apart. Rod bearings were a little worn, not bad and the mains looked new. I took the block down and had it boiled and new cam bearings, freeze plugs put in and i just got it back.. the gasket set fot the whole motor is way more expensive that i would have thought (used to working on older small blocks) and i got all the bearings and rings.. I plan on starting to put it back together today and taking my time. mic'ing everything. I will install new lifters as well as the sludge got into them and they are packed which was causing my inital problem to start with..
i will keep you posted..
thanks
Wolfy

Well i know it has been a while since i last posted. I got the motor out and got it all cleaned up and got it back together. Whoever desided to put this UNDER the windshield oh well nevermind. Anyhow it is back in and i got it fired up, it started and ran fine. the only issue i had was the radiator where the cap goes was broken i guess by me pulling or moving it around the garage while working on it. So i had to pull it back out and replace that. I got it back together yesterday evening and we have 200 miles on it now breaking it in right. So all is well.. the reason i had to take it apart we believe was someone mixed reg oil with synthetic. this sludged up everything.
thanka again for all who responded

if you have a photobucket album, copy the img code onto the post in the thread and it should show the picture. i think size max is 640.
