I was on my way home from work and my camaro completly lost power at 4500-5000rpm in third. I wasnt pushin her too hard, but i guess she didnt like it. Anyway, when i go to start it, it will sputter and stall. Sometimes if i wait 1/2 hour or so, ill start it and it will run for less than a second. It acts like its out of gas. I added 4 gallons. I checked for spark on all coils and the plugs looked just fine, wires too. Feul pressure is good, when key is in ON position and when cranking. Maybe a timing issue im thinking. Any help would be great, im without a car till i fix her.

thanks,

98 camaro, 3800v6

Sounds like your fuel pump could be gone or the IAC motor or a plugged cat.

the feul pump pumps at full pressure. I know there is good pressure at the rails. There is no cat, and the check engine codes a Throttle positioning sensor. Ive tried replacing it, but nothing happens. I know it works, because when its installed wrong(when it ran) it would idle at like 6000rpm. i went throught the entire wiring harness yesterday. I tried starting it today, and it didnt start. It backfired pretty bad. sounded like a 12 gauge going off.

need to test the tps circuit to see if the proper volts are being sent. so it ran with the tps installed wrong but wont when its in there right? if so then there is an issue in that part of the system. the maf will do stuff like this if its dirty or failing. is the 98 thottle by wire or cable?

it used to run with a tps code for the last year. I just replaced it 2 months ago and it still threw the code. I found a few burn wires in the loom that might have been the issue, but i fixed them and no start. I can check the TPS sensor, do you know what the resistance should be?

Sounds like you may still have some wiring problems, esp. if you still have a TPS code, and you found burnt wires before...

the code is still there until i reset it, right? i removed the entire harness and tested every wire with my ohmmeter. no problems there. I then cleared the codes, no codes showed, even with the "codes since clear" method on my otc scanner. I am almost eliminating the electrical aspect of the situation. Sounds like a serious vacuum leak. Whenever i start it, it dies quicker when hit the throttle. Last week before it broke i was checking for vacume leaks on all the vacume lines and sensors because it idled at 1600. Ive checked the o rings on the tps, mas, and the iac. could the EGR be stuck wide open??? Cause it will start then die in less than 2 seconds. I might be answering some of my own questions as i type lol.

I have a hard time believing the timing would slip. ill have to do a compression test tomorrow. hopefully nothing broke.

with key on the tps should have .5 volts or so at idle and go up to 4.75. volts or so at wot. i think its a blue wire without lookin it up.
