How can you tell if a 3.4 has a police package. Also there is something making a spinning noise under where the alternator is. I think it might be a bearing in one of the pumps. its the pump under the alternator. Please help thx.

On the 3.4L, directly below the alternator is the A/C pulley, so the noise could be from there, the alternator, or belt tensioner, maybe even the water pump -- is the water pump weeping? I would guess it's the tensioner, since mine was replaced twice over the years on my 3.4L. Although I replaced the alternator at least three times since 1998, and the water pump once.

If you're hearing a spinning noise from under the alternator... it's probably the alternator. I've gone through, literally, 8 alternators in my '94 3.4L and have heard a wide variety of sounds. Could be the bearing, could be the coil inside the alternator rubbing against the plastic shield. Take off the serpentine belt (put a socket on the tensioner bolt and push down) and spin the alternator, pump and tensioner, you should be able to check these easy enough. If it's a failing bearing or something rubbing inside the alternator, you'll be able to tell. If it is the alternator, so long as it's not siezed up and putting out voltage, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Protip: don't buy a cheap rebuilt alternator! even if they replace 6 in a row free as warranty replacements, it's not worth the trouble. Although I hear advance auto parts has a new supplier now, so maybe they're not absolute pieces of @#^@ anymore.
