I just did this today
I haven't done anything with the lid yet but I took out the silencer and just replaced it with a piece of 3in rubber coupling from lowes.
It was about 6 dollars and it came with the 2 clamps i needed. It fit in like it was made for the car, perfect length.

I don't think I'm going to bother with shaving the lid as I'm going to just purchase the SLP CAI which I think comes with a lid, if not I'll just purchase the SLP lid.

Here's a photo of the coupling that replaced the silencer

and also how long a piece of 3 inch pipe did you use. I'm guessing somewhere around 6 inches?

If you go to the plumbing section in lowes, look for a section with black rubber couplings, they are all the same length, I just grabbed the 3inch in and out, and it was the perfect length

edit: I decided to just go look on the lowes website to see if I could find it for you.
