i need to get this fixed
i need a new air pump (smog pump, air pollution pump, whatever one is right) for my 95 3.4.
the reason is either there is a short or its is damaged or old so it keeps blowing the fuse. the only place i see that i can buy one is Autozone and maybe a chevy dealership. Summit doesnt, checkers doesnt. i need to know where i can get one for the best price and would it be worth it to just go to the junkyard and get one? (i never heard of someone having to replace their smog pump) |
You might try www.rockauto.com. They usually have some good prices.

Does your car need to get emissions tested with a visual too? You don't need it otherwise.
|
i dont think there is a visual inspection but i do have to pass smog testing. without this will anything else happen? (catalytic converter damage, some other little thing might not work)

The smog pump helps to heat up the cat converters faster so that emissions aren't as high on a cold engine. With a hot engine, the smog pump isn't needed or used, which is when you want the car to be emissions tested anyway. The only issue is unplugging the electric smog pump will trip the check engine light, unless by some strange fluke yours doesn't.

so what i pulled from this is that there is no reason to spend 130 dollars on this pump so it might be worth it and try my luck with a used one?
|
Ya know in some states like IL, they no longer check emissions on '95 & older cars, so might want to check your state's laws before wasting $.

The Pump bearings can rust and seize with time, and overload the motor causing the fuse to blow. As a tempy fix, you could remove the pump squirt the bearings with penetrating oil. It it losens up, it may last long enough to pass inspection.

When it keeps blowing the fuse, does it trip your SES light? What made you look at it to see if it was working or not to begin with? If no SES light, I would have it tested as it is. Unless your goal is to do the "right" thing to get it working, and leave the ozone layer destruction to the rest of us. ;)

No lights no nothing just a fuse that keeps blowing.
I have no problem leaving it broken IF it wont lead to secondary problems. My big worry is that my cat will be messed up by this. If i drive my car BEFORE i get my smog checked the cat will be warm anyways so is it possible i will still pass? |
