hmm, i'm not positive as my camaro is of an older generation but i do know that some cars have and air/ fuel mixture sensor inside the cat. you might want to check that out. also i would suggest simply pulling the cat off and making shure that there isn't any debris ect. inside it. while you have it off try to run the car and see if it functions properly(caution it will be louder than stock) if the car runs okay without it, the problem (obviously) is in the cat.

I would check your O2 sensors, there should be one infront of the cat and one behind it i9n the exhaust system. Their pretty expensive and the only way to find out which one it is , is to hook a diagnosic computer up to it. You should be able to do this at your local parts store. If that isn't the problem, check your plugs and plug wires. They might have fallen against the exhaust manifold during the cat installation.

back fires are a cause of firing order with back pressure, take a peice of paper and hold it to the tail pipe. if it sucks in then you have to much pressure or a valve problem.

back firing could also be distibutor module going bad, if completly goes bad it will one real loud one and not start, it will also blow your muffler apart
