Default Gauge cluster issue

My mechanic said the whine I have been hearing could possibly be the gauge cluster. Has anyone ever had this issue? It's a 98 v6 with the a4 anyone know how much they go for?

No I just got the car back this afternoon while I was on my lunch break so i didn't get a chance to do anything yet. It's a high pitched whine that only occurs while in gear and light throttle.

Alternator whine... happens when the diodes go bad and it ripples AC through your system.

Deal with it a lot, alternator could be on it's way out.

sometimes the speedometer or alt will whine through the speakers. thats why i suggested taking the fuse for the stereo out. so its coming from inside the car?

Even new parts can be bad, I'd do what craby said, weed out to get to the culprit.

I'm going to try and get a video of the sound. It's not a constant sound. It only happens after the car has been warmed up and only occurs intermittently. My mechanic said it nothing dangerous but it's driving me crazy. I don't like not knowing what it is.

It wouldn't be an alternator whine then, because that would also happen while in park and revving the engine.
And the alternator whine would generally get worse when you load it down more, like when turning on your headlights.
