faulty gas gauge

As the title states, my gas gauge is way off from the actual amount in the tank. The gauge will read 3/4 when I know it's between a 1/4 to 1/2 full. It was always off just a bit, but has gotten progressively worse. Is the only culprit a sending unit in the tank, or is there another area to look for issues?

Funny in a ironic sorta way that you would post this about a 96 . I was just talking to a guy last night locally that has a 96 V6 and he said his gauge is off by half a tank. Maybe a gremlin in the 96's? I know my 97 is off by about a 1/4 tank.

I think it was Gorn that said the stock gauges are less than accurate.

The 96 and 98 that my kids are driving have inaccurate gas gauges as well. I have already made the trip with the gas can! LOL. "but Dad, the guage is showing I have a 1/4 tank or so!"

My mother just bought a '99 V6 Camaro and it's gauge is way off, too. Go figure! LOL

My 97's Oil Pressure Gauge with the orginal sending unit read between 40 and 60 lbs . I replaced it now when it first starts I have closer to 100 and its now normally around 80. All from a 3800 with 149 K on it.So either the gauge is screwy , the sending unit is screwy or something.

Any way to fix this? A special shop or buy new sensors?

mine is off about a 1/4 too kinda sux

RedKnight 07-10-2010 12:54 AM

I'm hoping it doesn't involve dropping the tank. That would SUCK!

Mine is accurate. However it doesn't matter because the car doesn't run right now :(
I'm not sure what would cause all of your guys' gauges to be off like that. I've never seen that.

get used to it, the gages are like this because of the shape and mounting of the fuel tanks on the 4th gens. my first 93 ran out at 1/8th. this one will go to e both dropped really fast once to 1/2 tank. when at 3/4 i have a little less than 1/2 tank. https://camaroforums.com/forum/lt1-l...uta-gas-69608/
