egr valve
In doing a little research on this car and problem, it seems as though the EGR system is a known problem with this engine. On the MSN auto section, the reliability section mentions an EGR system clogging problem and quotes a normal charge for repair as $10 for parts (gasket I assume) and $65 for labor. I can only assume this refers to just cleaning out the system or the valve itself. I did remove the valve, cleaned the 3 ports with carb cleaner and put on a new gasket. Did no good. When I read it with my scanner, I get the stored "77 EGR solenoid #3 failure" code. I'm not the worlds greatest mechanic, so I don't know if that means the solenoid itself on port 3 isn't working or if the port itself is plugged. Since all 3 ports are of various sizes, I can only assume that port 3 only comes into play as a fine tune under certain conditions. I have no problem with replacing the valve, (aside from the cost) but would hate to do that and still have the same problem. A guideline I recently came across from the State of Indiana cautioned mechanics about just replacing the valve, only to have customers return with the same problem. I don't know how to check all 3 sides for proper voltage either, so the cure will just have to be a best guess by trial and error. What makes the most sense to you? I do think I will take off the valve one more time and soak the base in some cleaner or solvent to see what that does. What cleaner I have't determined yet. I just checked my mileage again this last week and I'm getting 28/17. I'm trying to bump both of those up by about 2 or 3, but I don't know if the EGR system will have any effect on that. Also intend to install a cold air system hoping for some help there.
if my egr valve aint affecting my gas problems what is ive done so much to make my car good on gas right know ive been puttin nothin but money in my gas tank what is my problem then has anyone had to fix there wheel bearing i starting to hear a sound when i turn
If it only happens when you turn really hard, it's probably the sound of your tire scraping the inside of the wheel well. I destroyed two perfectly good tires that way
Now I'm very careful not to turn the wheel so hard. Worth jacking your car up and seeing if the wheel is loose, though. Check the back side of your tire for wear, too, while you're at it.
