Default Code 1870B

Hi again everyone,

I have yet another question - 2 years ago I was road tripping and the 'service engine' light came on so I had it checked at a garage and they checked out my car said it seemed alright but they got the code:

'P1870B' - Manufacturer Controlled Trans

They said I had to go to a dealership to find out whatever the hell that meant and charged me $95 :'( I continued my roadtrip and my car never broke down or acted funny or anything...

I never got that code checked because it cost me 95 to get it checked the first time and dealerships are known to be super expensive..

So any idea what code 1870B is?

EDIT:
So i did a search and found another thread:
https://camaroforums.com/forum/showt...highlight=1870
Says 1870 is transmission failure? I've put 1000's of miles on her since then and about 2ish month's ago had my transmission fluid/filter flushed/filled and they hooked it up to a machine that was supposed to check pressure and make sure it is working properly and the shop said my transmission was fine.

Should I still be worried about this?

That code means the TCC is slipping. The PCM is comparing engine and input shaft speeds with the TCC activated, and is seeing slippage. You won't normally notice a bad TCC unless you really paying attention.

Yeah my car is having that problem... It's the torque converter starting to go bad. Mine doesn't do it all the time and is probably caused by this summer's track abuse. Once I spin the clutch out, I'm just gonna replace it with a 3k stall :P

You will almost NEVER notice it. I only notice it in the low RPMs when the converter is actually engaging the TCC. And even then it's only once in a blue moon.

Sorry I am noobish and have no Idea what this 'TCC' really is or does?

How do i notice it slipping? And do I need to get it serviced right away or like when it finally goes..?

I didn't mention either after having it reset 2 years ago the service engine never came up again.

What should I do?
Thanks guys you are awesome!

The Torque Converter Clutch is what TCC stands for. I would replace it as soon as possible if I could to avoid any lasting damage to the transmission. But it's not going to make too big of a difference. You'll notice TCC slip normally in the low RPM range around 1500-2200 RPMs. It kinda feels like the car goes in neutral for a split second. TCC slip is very hard to feel though unless you're really paying attention.

Hey EvilKal, you are the man!

I've checked some other threads and my car shares some of the same things other cars did, and can I ask you about this..? It's similar to a thread you replied in:

While bringing my car home after about a 50mile drive I had been using the cruise control because I was lazy and on the highway I suddenly noticed my engine getting louder and the rpm's increasing but It looked like I was gaining no engine power and maybe actually slowing down from no gas at all, so first I gave it a little gas to try to get a reaction but didn't gain any speed so I said **** it and pulled over for a min, note that the rpm gauge probly didn't get much over 4000 before I pulled over. I think I shut the car off and turned it back on but don't really remember. Anyway after a few min I got back on the road and drove her home and cammy drove fine home, I figured it was something like my cruise control being stupid.

Lol does that sound like the torque convertor trying to blow and leave me stranded!?!

Im going to get this fixed, probably wait until the spring though when I drive her more - would you reccommend buying the 'TC' online or just at a local auto-parts store...? This sounds like a tough job so I should probably leave this to the proffessionals right? I'm no mechanic but can handle easy jobs on my car and have my repair book for reference.

TY

I blew my TC sky high and it did exactly what you described. That could be your torque converter slipping but usually if it slips THAT bad you'll just strip the clutch entirely.

If you're keeping it stock, any OE replacement will be fine. Might even be able to find a decent one at a junkyard with low miles.

And if you don't know much about a transmission, I would let a shop handle it. It's not very hard, just time consuming and involves dropping the motor/trans.

^ yep what he said torque converters arent bad if you have the right toold ( lift engine crane etc lol) but to do it yourself in your garage is not ideal
