Default car stopped on highway

my 95 3.4 just cut out on the highway. the rps's revved up but i went nowhere.
I figured i was out of gas
So i pulled over i had less than a quarter tank of gas. (1/8 probably)
The weird thing is that the needle has gone lower than it was at today.
So after container trying to start it and it just kept turning over i went to a gas station near by.
i got 1 gallon of gas and put it in the tank.
I tried to start it again then i backfired and kept turning over
So my friend brought me a 5 gallon tank of gas and after pouring it all in it just kept turning over again.
So i noticed after a while my battery was low so i tried jumping it and nothing happened.
then after getting it towed i came down to the fact that my car needs a new fuel pump.

If you can offer help on what else i can do other than dropping the rear end and taking out the tank or any other solution please let me know.
Im in plugging my battery now to see if reseting the comp helps.
(sorry for the long post i was just making sure i put everything in there)

Sounds like you burned out the fuel pump -- run it too low, and the pump overheats -- happened to me in my '95 3.4L. Extended Warranties are your friend, by the way...

Check this out for another option -- a fuel pump door:

Last year I was driving had the cruise set. All of a sudden without warning everything went out. Volts dropped to 0. Fuel went to E, everything went. Would not turn over. Next day about $1,200 and a new fuel pump later. Open the gas door and put your ear to it. Have a friend get in and turn the key to see if you hear the fuel pump clicking. Good luck.

Hey thetal, try this trick, Have your mom in the car and try and start it while you hit the gas tank with a rubber mallet sometimes you can jar the pump and see if it starts. if it does start replace the pump it will stop working again so do not trust it..
