Default Aligning Timing Chain Gear/sprocket?

Hi guys,

I had to replace my timing cover gasket and thought I miles as well change the timing chain set.

I originally learned to put the cam gear at the 6 o'clock position to face the engine block marking and the crank gear onto the 12 o'clock position. Having tried this several times, I could not get the gears to line up right and the timing chain could not install at this position. The cam gear bolts would not line up correct and not thread in right. Having given up, I currently put back both cam and crank gears to how I found them before removing the chain. The cam at 3 o'clock and the crank at about 5-4 o'clock.

Am I missing something or what? Any advice would help. Thank you !

Pay attention to the cylinder # TDC key that's shown at the center of the cam gear:

Whoops! This is the V6 section...I just caught that.
Oh well, save the illustration for when you step up to a Z28.

So for the v6 i should set it at the #4 TDC? And for v8 it should be set at #1 TDC? Is that correct?

So I ended up putting in my timing chain as close as possible to how I had found it. Which is - Crank sprocket at about 6 o'clock, Cam gear at 3 o'clock and im on my forth day driving it to work and back.

Now I have a bit of a squeaking noise, maybe its the serpentine belt or tensioner? Or is there a breaking in point for a new water pump?

Yes follow that animation. How did you line up your marks, facing each other, or both straight up at 12:00?. If facing each other, the distributor should be pointing at the #6 cylinder. If both marks are up, distributor should be pointing to cylinder #1.
