I had driven my 1999 Camaro, 3.8 liter V6 all day and stopped at a store. When I returned to the car after only a few minutes, it started but just kind of "chugged". After a few tries, it wouldn't start at all. I have had similar problems in the past, which ended-up being my coil packs. Tried switching these out with no luck. When we sprayed gasoline in the intake it would start and run for a moment, leading us to believe it may be a bad fuel pump. However, I am unsure of what other things to check before purchasing a new fuel pump (anyone know of one cheaper than $263???). We would like to wire the pump manually and see if it works that way, as we are not hearing it run when the switch is on. Anyone know where I can get a wiring schematic for the 99? I had the repair manual, but a "friend" borrowed it and never returned it! Also, if we do replace the pump, is it really better to cut the trap door? I have seen mixed reviews on this one and am very picky when it comes to cutting holes in my car.

on the passenger side under the hood up by the ecu there should be a wire coming out of the harness, its a test wire for the pump. why not check the fuel pressure? oem pump is best, the walbro pump is kind of hit and miss could last a few yrs or a few days. but is cheaper.

 

We did a visual check on the fuel pressure several times. Initially, it appeared to have ample pressure, but by the third check, it was just gurgling. These checks occurred between switching out the coil packs and attempting to start the car, so it does appear to be a fuel pump problem. It's just knowing whether it's the pump itself, some sensor issue or a power problem.

Oh, and the pump I'm looking at is on Parts Geek.com. It is a Delphi for $263. Sound reasonable???

 

i found a ac/delco one at rms for a 99ss but have not found one for the base. 390. bucks. wow. 263 sounds ok. i couldnt find a delphi for any less.

 

Thanks for checking for me! I've been on the net for hours with no luck on finding something cheaper. I guess I shouldn't complain, though. The first price I got on it was $450!
Did you have an opinion on the issue of whether to drop the tank or cut the trap door?

 

dropping the tank can be a btch i would cut a trap door just incase something didnt go right and you need to get in there again theres no need to drop the tank more than once but sht always happens

i dropped my tank and pulled the rearend to change mine. mostly because i had to drop the rearend anyways to get the new exhaust in. i dont think i would do it again. its really hard on the fuel lines and is a major pita. so long as u do the hatch mod right its nice looking and ull never know its there.

 

I did the trap door and I am glad I did. I got a defective pump and had to swap it out 3 weeks later.
