Default 1996 Automatic Transmission Problem

I am having a problem where my car is not shifting by itself. I have to manually let go of the gas and then re apply it for it to shift out of first. I am pretty sure that the other gears aren't shifting either but they are much less noticeable than first where it would redline if I don't change gears. Any suggestions?

What details do you need? It has a 3200 Series II engine. I mean in order for it to shift itself out of first I have to release my foot from the gas, let it change gear, then press the gas again.

Sounds like it's time for a new tranny. Your syncronoydes are shot.

What exactly are syncronoydes and is there a way to fix it without changing the tranny?

they are what allow the tranny to shift up and down gears. the only way to fix them is to replace them. If you feel confident in replacing them you can but if not go to a tranny shop and get them to rebuild your tranny.

But they do shift up and down. They just wont shift up while I am holding the gas, usually. I just noticed that if I am already in a sort of high gear and try to floor it it will upshift me before it will downshift me and then I'll take off.

I think this is an Automatic we are talking about. The problem is either a pressure issue or the valves that control the shift. Shift control valves can be replaces without pulling the Trans. If its a pressure problem it most likely will require a rebuild. You should find the best tranny shop in your area and get it looked at. You do not have the tools or knowledge to fix this.

It sounds like the 1-2 shift solenoid is crapping out on you. they are not hard to replace but if you are not comfortable around a throttle body I would not do this yourself. Like gorn said go and have a rebutable trans shop take a look see at it.
