Need something cleared up
Ok Ive been doing research on this whole trans issue Im having. I got the car home finally last night and the trans is just done, its slamming into drive and reverse both and the fluid smells like burnt ****. So Im just gonna go ahead and get a new trans, my problem here, Ive been told 3 different transmissions... 4l60, 4l60e, and 700r4. Can someone please clarify which transmission came in a 1993 Chevy Camaro Z28? Or which one will work so I dont buy the wrong one. Please and thank you!

The 4L60 (what you have) and 700R4 is the same trans, GM just gave the 700R4 a new name in the early 90's. Rear wheel drive cars got the 4L60E (electronic shift) in 94, whereas trucks & vans already got the 4L60E in 93. Older than 93 4L60/700R4's will work, but I can't say the electrical hookup and/or solenoids for the locking torque converter will be the same. That's something you'll want to research further.

You can use a stand-alone trans controller, such as the TCI EZ-TCU, but it costs (cough) about 600 bux. Unless you're after some extra expense, you're better off looking for the right 4L60/700R4.

I figured it wouldnt be cheap, I just found one out of a 93' firebird v6 for $150. BUT I just ran my vin through a vin decoder and its coming back as having a manual transmission in the car -__-

I skimmed over that part before. So a previous owner then converted your car over to an automatic? Could have slapped in one that was already on it's last leg. Also, not hooking up anything to make the torque converter lockup can burn up the trans. The internal fluid pressure is designed to flow a certain way once the t.c. locks up. Take a look see if there is anything plugged into the lockup solenoid connection on the side of the trans. Sounds like a shlock "shadetree mechanic" may have been putting his hands where they didn't belong.
