Default Raider's 1994 Build Project

I don't know why it has taken me so long to get around to doing this, but I am starting a project thread for my car. Some of the initial pictures/information you may have seen before, but I want to encompass it all here from start to finish so bear with me.

Basic information:

Car is a 1994 Z28 (B4C code) Camaro 6-speed with 106,000 miles in Polo Green Metallic. I purchased it for $3000 from a mechanic's lot. With the exception of a K&N intake, lowering springs, and a muffler it is bone stock.

Here are pictures when I first took it home:

Taking the advice from some of them members here, (and after constant beating of my head against the wall and indecisiveness) I wrote up a basic plan for my car. It is in no way finished and changes regularly based on many factors but here you go anyway:

1994 Camaro Project

What I want to accomplish:

I want to build a car that is a street-able weekend warrior. I want it to be reliable enough to drive when and where I want. I want to be able to participate in track days, autocross events, and drag racing on infrequent occasions. I want to be able to work on the car as time and money permits. I want to be able to be proud of my vehicle when I stand next to it or show it off. I want people (especially females lol) to look at it and go wow that’s a cool car. I want to do as much of the work as possible by myself. I would like to drive the car and get a good amount of seat time before motor swap and associated components.

Resources I have:

I have a full shop available to me with a four post lift. I have a wide variety of hand tools needed for my car. I have a sandblaster, air compressor, parts cleaner, press, engine stand, engine hoist, jacks, dollys, etc. I have many parts from two donor cars. I have two engines. I have a shop manual and a performance guide book.

Resources I need:

  •
    • OBD I Scan tool
  •
    • Orbital Sander
    • Respirator
What I absolutely will do/need to do:

  •
    • Aftermarket Seats (currently working on options)
    • Replace carpet with black/charcoal carpet from 93-02 Chevy Camaro Carpet Coupe 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002
    • Replace headliner with black headliner from 93-02 Chevy Camaro Headliner, Hard Top, Chevrolet Headliner 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002
    • New dash (on order)
    • Full exhaust featuring coated long tube headers, ORY pipe, Electronic Cutout, and mild cat-back exhaust. (these will be purchased in conjunction with motor build)
    • Optispark. New or Reman mine with MSD cap and rotor kit
    • HID headlights
    • Tint or new Tailights
    • Re-spray factory color with Silver Stripes
    • Replace Clutch
    • Change all fluids and check seals/inspect rear
    • New door panels (purchased)
    • Build second motor into 383 monster (separate document/guide for this) as time and money permits.
    • Stereo system with 10” enclosure from sub-thump, new wiring, two amps, four coaxial speakers, wired directly into new head unit.
    • Fix door separation
    • New window motors/regulators.
    • Respray/Replace interior plastics with black.

What I would like to do:

  • Custom gauge face and needles from 6LE
  • 6-point Roll Bar from Wolfe
  • Harness
  • Umi Shock tower brace
  • Umi Subframe connectors
  • Rear-end (replace/rebuild) ???
  • Aluminum driveshaft
  • SS wheels and new tires
  • Umi pan-hard bar kit
  • Umi A-arms
  • Electric water pump
  • Spend some time at a race school

I then began stripping down the interior:

The interior is now COMPLETELY stripped of everything, I just don't have pictures of it

Looks good so far.

Wish I had a four post lift, that'd make things 10x easier. But you seem to be going the same route as me, good for a little of everything. Haha.

For the rear, you're best off replacing. You can buy a bolt in 12 bolt or 9in from Moser for a few K. If you got good fab skills you could do a 8.8 out of a Explorer/Ranger/Mustang or even the older GM 10 bolts that had the 8.5 in ring gear. The 8.8 will handle almost as much abuse has the 9in, but without the parastic draw. Rears is something you'll have to look into.

MK- That's the idea. the rear swap will be done in conjunction with the motor build. I was initially thinking about rebuilding the 10-bolt with the 8.5" parts but I am thinking about quick performance's 9in now. However this will be later down the road once the 383 is done.

Edward- I am planning on updating again tonight. I have a rather large backlog of pictures and stuff that is already done, just didn't have time to post it all last night.

Well can't wait to see more.

And I don't know why, but that sticker, "Use overdrive during high speed pursuit" makes me laugh a little every time I see it.

Ok time to do some more catching up! As some of you know I had purchased a donor car about a month ago for $500 out of a storage lot. I was told the motor and trans were blown. Initially I was going to gut it and scrap what I didn't want, but I got curious and started messing with it. After a few hours of tinkering I found out it wasn't getting spark and traced that problem to a bad ground on the ICM. I removed it, cleaned all the wires and the mounting bracket up, re-installed and she fired up on a half second of crank! After she warmed up a bit white smoke started billowing out of the exhaust and there was a lot of noise coming out of the left manifold. So i figured blown head gasket and found a broken stud on the manifold. WooHoo! Second engine to work with. Trans also went into PRND just fine and I was able to move her under her own power. So new plan is to keep this engine to rebuild the way I want it while my car stays drivable and sell the trans to make some money back.

When I first got it:
