no subwoofer just speakers

In my 97 Z28 convertible the previous owner has installed an Alpine CDE9874 stereo unit. He also replaced the door speakers and installed a sub in the trunk. When I bought the car he had removed the sub already. I have not checked out the door speakers yet except to note they are slightly smaller than original and installed with zip ties suspending them in the opening where the original speaker was. The whole system sounds kinda tinny and I was wondering if I can install an extra set of 6x9's I have into the harness that is still there for the subwoofer. I don't want to buy a sub. Anyone ever tried this before? It looks like it can be done according to the owners manual I found online for the Alpine head unit.
Thanks for any ideas!
Jeff

how many amps is it pushing for the sub

16 watts rmsx4 is the only spec I can find in the manual. Does that help? I thought that a sub had its own amp? But I don't know much about them. I've installed tons of car stereos in my lifetime but never had one with a sub. I just thought maybe I could deepen the sound of this one somewhat by adding the two 6x9's and having them take the place of a sub.

OK I think he had some sort of amp too cuz there is a power wire (disconnected) that runs back to the trunk also.

yep its a preamp so you will need a amp for it to work right. probably had the other speakers through a amp too and thats why they sound sucky. may have also threw some old speakers in to replace the good ones he had in it. i have done that when buyer says not interested in stereo.

you should check out www.crutchfield.com. you can find different brands of speakers that fit your car and they're pretty cheap too. I replaced all the speakers in my car for $120, just $60 for a pair.
