Fog light and SGS button backlight LED

I looked through the LED threads and did not see this information.

I got the car with a lot of the interior bulbs out. I started replacing them with green LED. The climate control was easy, they are just small bulbs. The door lights are the same.

My fog light button was out and the SGS button was really dim. And those are unique. They are not really meant to be replaceable, but I am a determined man with a soldering iron.

The bulbs inside them are this:

That's actually a small incandescent bulb in a tiny blue rubber cap. GM loves those for some reason. These bulbs are soldered in and kind of a pain to get to.

The first order of business is to get the switches out of the dash. The way to do it is covered in about a million tutorials for replacing radios. Basically, yank the bezel, unplug switches.

The thing you do not typically do is remove them. That's pretty easy:

You need to pry on the sides, and it will pop out.

Like with any plastic prying, don't overdo it, or you will need a new bezel.

Once you remove the switches you will see they have four locking tabs on the bottom. I forgot to take a picture of that. You have to use two small screwdrivers and pop them apart. Don't do this in the car - the switches have a tiny metal tab in them that will fall out.
This tab is flat in on/off switches like the fog light, and bent in momentary switches like SGS.

Don't lose it, or you will need a new switch. Don't worry about which way it goes - it can only fit one way. The hard part is to not have it pop out of place when you snap the switch back together.

The little round white thing is the bulb holder. You don't really need it.

To replace the bulb-in-a-condom I got some green LEDs from Amazon. This was a pack of 30 for 6 bucks or something. They are 3mm flat top LED

Once you get the switches apart, you will see this. Note that the SDS and fog switch are similar, but the backlight uses different posts.

This is the fog light switch. The + for the backlight is the one circled. The ground is the other one the bulb is soldered to.

This is the SGS switch

Red is +, green is ground. Note the + is in the same place, but ground is different.

I prepped the LED by cutting and stripping the wire

And then I just stuck it in place of the bulb and soldered it in.

I accidentally deleted the pictures of the LED in place, but if you got this far, it isn't hard to figure out.

After this, you put the metal tab in and snap the switch together. It has tabs to make it go only one way.

I recommend doing that on a solid surface rather than in your hands, less chance the tab will pop out of place.

The end result is this:
