kinda the power is transferred from the alt to the battery and electronics at the same time, if the battery is weak it can become a load causing the alt to struggle and eventually die.

contrary to popular belief you are not supposed to unhook the battery when the car is running. can burn up the internal voltage regulator or toast a negative diode in the alternator.

When you changed the belt, did the tensioner fight you with a bit of force? When an alternator is under a load, you'd have one heck of a time trying to spin the pulley by hand. If the tensioner is weak, you'll have a loose and slipping belt, and an alternator that isn't spinning or putting out like it should.
Could also be that a bearing in the alternator is starting to lock up, momentarily stopping the alternator. Had that happen once, where the gauge was getting jittery, shortly before the alternator locked up and burned through the belt. Happened on a road trip, late on a Sunday night, 6 hours from home, with no parts stores open. Hate when that happens.

exhaust leaks are more of a tick than a whistle, but that would have nothing to do with the power issue.

EGR wouldn't affect alternator output or the gauge, unless it's making the rpm's drag waaaaay low, where the engine is on the verge of killing.
But, you never said anything about where your rpm's are when this is happening. Fill us in there.

Well everyone even though I did the self alternator test, it turned out to be the alternator. Apparently when I changed the belt the new tension I put on the old alt caused it to put strain on it.. So new alternator and it feels like a new car.. Thsnks for all your help and advice
