Smile VIN Decoder

Hi Guys

I'm new to the site and from the UK. I have a 1996 Camaro RS

I'm looking for some help with the VIN number.

My car is currently showing on my registration documents as a 1995 (It was registered incorrectly when it was imported). I need to get this changed to 1996. I have found a VIN Decoder on the net that shows that my car is a 1996 but I'm not sure the Driver and Vehicle Licencing Agency will accept that as proof of the car's year.

Does any one know how I can get something from GM to confirm what year my car is or any other idea on how to get proof of the year?

Thanks In Advance

Maria

The VIN IS the "document" of proof showing what the year is. If your tag hasn't been tampered with (illegally changed), then your registration is obviously wrong and needs to be corrected. Here in the states, the secretary of state and insurance companies base what car you have off the VIN...period!!!

The factory issues a "Certificate Of Origin" whenever a new car is delivered to a dealership. I don't know if duplicates are available, but you could ask GM & see if they can help.

Thanks for all your replies
Trouble is I don't have any paper work for it at all. I think because its old and because its been imported over here. Here in the UK we don't really use the VIN as much as you guys. We go by the number plate here as it stays with the car. Does any one have the factory service manual with the definition page that I could have a look at?

Try this site

http://www.compnine.com/vid.php

This will tell you what your car came with and when it was made. Your country may determine the year of the car by the year it was built and not by it's model year.

Example my car was built on 4-29-1999, it is a 1999 but only a month or so before the last of the 99s were built. If your car was built in july or august then it may be considered a year ahead of it's build year.

Just curious then, if the UK doesn't cross check between the VIN and the registration docs, and if you can't easily get it straightened out, what's the concern with changing it? The VIN is bible, if it ever came down to them nit-picking the details. Speaking about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing, you wouldn't believe what goes on at the Sec. of State's office here. I recently had a car that had two different sets of plates registered to it. You'd think that would throw a red flag up!! And another car where I transferred plates from one to another (and got the reg. slip), but they didn't really renew the tag. Drove around for six months like that till my car got a couple of tickets for expired plates? Although, Obama is from Chicago, IL. Say no more I guess!! Enjoy driving your "95"

I tried that site you gave and I think that might come in helpful. I think with all this I might be able to get my car properly registered!

Thanks for all your help
