Default turn key...get check enging light, no attempt to start

i just got back from iraq and hopped i my 2001 camaro ss that had been started every 2 weeks and occasionally driven by a friend. The security light would sometimes be on and prevent the car from starting until it went off. On the way home one day the check engine light came on, and wouldnt go off. I parked it and decided id take it to the shop the next day. I tried to but it wont start or even click over. The battery is fine, gas is half full, i have no idea why all im getting is a check engine light. Any help would be appreciated before i bring someone out to look at it

Does the security light come on? what about accessories? I had a similar problem, I drove mine to work parked it, everything was just fine, went to leave from worka nd the thing wouldn't start, I went through about ten different things that I though was wrong ended up being my Vat key just up and decided to stop working right. Somehow the resistor in the key changed resistance and wouldn't let the security system disarm, this is apparently very very rare but can tell you that it does happen from experience.

I had the same problem with a 97 SS and it was my ingnition switch and the harness was badon the steering colum. It took me about 2 hours to swap. After I changed it out I never had the sercurity light problem....
