trouble fueling
 

I have an 02 z28 and suddenly I'm having trouble gassing up. The fuel nozzle keeps clicking off as though the tank is full and takes quite a while to fuel up. I'm thinking maybe a fuel tank vent has become blocked and not allowing the release of pressure. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Is there a fuel tank vent and if so where is it located? TIA

Some kind of blockage in the inlet?
When you remove the gas cap it would release the pressure.

I believe there is a roll over ball. If it got stuck it would let you fill the neck only.

I didn't see any blockage in the inlet. Like I said, when I start to fuel it almost immediately clicks off. I can fuel only very, very, slowly or it clicks off. What is this roll over ball and what should I look for?

I used a couple feet of fuel hose to poke down the neck into the tank hoping it might dislodge whatever is causing the blockage. Don't know if it helps until I have to get gas again. All suggestions to fix the problem welcomed.

When you pushed the hose in did you hear pressure bleed off? If your system is building pressure and the evap system is not venting the pressure it could push the roll over ball shut. If you unplugged the evap valve aka the tank vent this should also vent the pressure. Once the pressure is gone it should let you pump gas unless the ball is stuck.

Ever use a shop vac? they have a fall over ball that should limit how much water comes out if it get knocked over. The roll over valve is the same idea, for safety/epa reasons engineers do not want the gas tank emptying out on the road.

When I fed a couple feet of 1/4" hose into the tank it didn't actually get to the fuel because it came out dry. No pressure was released. I will try again. Where is the tank vent located? Where do I access it from? TIA

dont know if the 02 has vent hose that goes from tank area of the gas cap area but if you do you may wish to check that its not plugged or kinked.

The Service Manual didn't show any information that I could find about this valve except this illustration. Maybe it will help explain what you could be dealing with. This illustration comes from the 2000 Service Manual, but I'm pretty sure the 2002 model year would be the same.

Thanks for that information. When I find the solution to the problem I'll post back. Might be a few days. Again thanks all of you for your suggestions. Apparently it is an odd issue. :(

Have you tried turning the gas pump handle when pumping gas?

On my Seville I had to have the gas pump handle in a four a clock position, otherwise the pump would shut off immediately.

This has probably to do with European gas pumps doesn’t always go so well with American cars and doesn’t explain your problem, but its easy to try
