Default Transmission gone out, how much for an engine swap?

Transmission in my 98 started slipping in first.

I can sell my '98 body(for around $800) get a decent looking '00 roller with blown head gaskets for $1000 and just swap my engine into the nicer looking car with a good transmission.

Or I can keep my car and just have the transmission rebuilt at the local shop for $375, and spend $450 on a new paint/clearcoat, $100 for a new front bumper cover.

THE REAL QUESTION IS How much would it cost in labor to have the 3.8l engine swapped? from my car to and take the one out of the '00 to put mine in? Or would it be better to just have my transmission rebuilt?

my cousin says he and another guy he knows that does jobs like this on the side, quite a few, will charge $600 in labor.
But just dropping the trans and getting it rebuilt would be cheaper, but still another $500 for paint.

Last time I checked the only time the automatic tranny changed in the F-bodies was in '94 when they switched to the 4L60E sooo I can safely assume anything out of a Camaro or Firebird will work.

hey, jack the car up in the front, place 2 jack stands underneath, take that trans out, and rebuild it. its fun, and will be very cheap since only first is going

it would be stupid to pull the trans apart and just fix first gear, if your going to do it do it right and rebuild the whole thing.

Well there's a local salvage yard selling that 96 camaro 6-231 transmission for $150, comes with 30 day warranty/exchange... hard to pass up and beats paying $375 for a rebuild, just because I'm very tight on money atm and need my car.

Thanks for all the info guys, I think I'ma buy this cheap trans, then when it goes out, get a proper rebuild for $375
