Tranny overheat
#14
I say yay if the color or smell tells you it needs a change. On two recent cars with 700R4's, I've even had all the fluid transfused with no issues later. However, one of them looked like it was maintained regularly, the other one's interval was questionable. The complete system took 11.2 qts., a pan drop & fill only changes about 5 qts.

I say yay change it. And I don't think your car is going to last that long if you say you drive it hard ALL the time. Most stock cars aren't made for constant abuse. Driving your car hard puts alotta extra stress on alotta parts.

I'm way more inclined to believe that your continuous "spirited driving" could have dislodged some sediment to make a valve in the valve body hang up, or you could have had a stuck shift solenoid. 3,000 rpm's shouldn't hurt a transmission, and if your fluid is burned because of it, you have other serious tranny issues. If you've never changed the fluid/fiilter, now might be a good time to do so.
Is it also a good idea to exchange transmission fluid in automatics? I've notices some rough shifting after the car warms up a little. Or is it a bad idea to do it? I recently hit 100k on my car.

i do mine every 40 to 50k miles. you can get a copy of your owners manual here http://www.extendedgmwarranty.com/ow...r_manuals.html heres what my owners manual says.
NO. SERVICE
6 Transmission Service - For manual transmissions,
fluid doesn’t require changing.
For automatic transmissions, change both the fluid
and filter every 15,000 miles (25 OOO km) if the
vehicle is mainly driven under one or more of these
conditions: outside
temperature regularly reaches 90°F (32°C) or
higher.
In hilly or mountainous terrain.
When doing frequent trailer towing.
Uses such as found in taxi, police car or delivery
service.
If you do not use your vehicle under any of these
conditions, change both the fluid and filter every
100,OOO miles (160 O00 km).

If the trans has been maintained regularly (scheduled changes), then you have much less of a chance of something going south after a fluid change. In your case, I would drop the pan and just change that much. Then you can also change the filter, who knows if it's ever been changed. That will also give you an opportunity to see if there is anything in the pan that doesn't belong (clutch fragments, etc.). Does your trans shift hard into all the gears, or just for the 1-2 shift? Have you had your computer scanned for any transmission error codes, even though your check engine light may not be on?
