Default RE: torque converters?

ok since nobody will answer the a tq converter is ill try my best to describe it.

first off, its used on an automatic transmission. every auto tranny has one, but the stock one is set to a low rpm. its like a clutch sort of and it slips at lower RPMs and engages at whatever RPM you have it built for. i dont know what the stock one is, but lets call it 1800 rpm. this means that anything below 1800 rpm the tranny will slip, and thus allowing the engine to rev faster to that rpm, when it then engages. since our cars (and most cars in general) produce more power at higher RPM it is beneficial to allow the engine to get to its power band faster.

now for gears, these refer to the ratio in the rear axle. The gear ratio has direct correlation to your RPM at different speeds. My stock A4 comes with 2.73 gears. a more popular gear ratio for stock fobdies is 3.43. now if you compare the two, say both in an A4 tranny, at 70 mph the 2.73 geared car might have an RPM of 1800, with the 3.43 geared car will be at 2100. this means that the lower the gear ration, the higher the MPG, the higher the top speed, but has a cost of a slower acceleration. autos tend to come with lower gear rations because they have less gears, where a t-56 has 6 gears, so it wont hurt to have 3.73 gear ratio since you can drop the RPM by going to a higher gear.

ok, now after that description, id say do both, but your gas mileage will drop.

yank makes a converter for the 4L60E that has a 4000 stall.. What would be the benefit/down fall in my 94 Z28 A4 if i put in 3.73 gears. Or even4.11? The other ones for the 4l60e are 3600 and 3200 and they all cost the same. Which would be the best bet with 3.73 gears?

I'd say you should worry about getting that thing to run right before you spend money on a TQ converter.

http://www.gvperformance.com/store/i...&catId=157 <- inside your budget

http://www.converter.com/vigilante.htm < slightly outside your budget

These are more like options to choose that are close to your budget. You drive a Camaro, and the transmission is a 4L60E. Feel free to continue the Google or Yahoo search. All I was doing.
