Default Tightening serpentine belt on 3.4 v6...

Alright guys, no wise cracks about a girl working under the hood...
After hearing some screeching, my dad and I checked my belt and it was so lose it was scary. He immediately told me "tensioner is bad" and left it at that. I wanted to make sure, so I did some research on how to tighten.
So, I put a ratchet on the bolt in the middle of the tensioner and started losening it (can't hurt it at this point). But as I losen the bolt, the belt tightens. This seems backwards to what I thought would happen, so can that be right?
Once the belt was at normal tightness I tightened the bolt back down. Everything seems fine now, I just want to make sure everyone else thinks so too? Sorry if this is an ignorant question, but I do body and paint, not mechanics.

Your tensioner is going to need replaced. It is not piviting correctly by losening it you allowed it to spring into the position it should be in. Problem is it needs to be able to get there without you losening it. It will just get stuck again. You should replace the belt also. When the tensioners fail like this they tend to wear the belt unevenly.
