in a 1999 camaro SS
it says 3 letters like ARS or whatever. I was thinking it could be some sort of traction control or something...Can someone please elaborate on what this is and why/when to have it engaged / disengaged
thanks

interesting, i dont have an owners manual.
how exactly does this work? does it really kill takeoff power compared to not using it ?
would it be good for driving in curves ?
sort of confused.
i will be getting an owners manual in the near future.

well all traction control is really to detect if you tires are spinningor tires loose tractionwhile your driving to stop them from spinning, and help you from loosing control, its automatically engaged when you start the car, itskinda like abshow it keeps you from just sliding when you slam on brakes, but that button should turn it off if its your traction control, as far as curbs, it could help if your taking a curb too fast and your tires start to loose traction it would stop it, idk how well it works in the maro's but in the vette i drove, it works magic in handling, but when you want to do a burn out its just a pain...and an ugly site when your trying to do a burn out with it on

My 99 has what is called second gear start and only engages if the driver does so. This just make the tranny start in second gear so you don;t spin out taking off on a wet road, ice, etc. Works really too. But on mine it is not automatically engaged. Not sure if yours is the same thing.

second gear start? thats new to me, sounds similar to that safety feature the vettes have where it makes you go from 1st to 4th at a certain rpm

Yeah there is a toggle switch on the dash next to the driving light switch. If you turn it on the car will only start off in second gear will will shift normally into drive ond overdrive. I've done some interesting 360's ontaking off onto wet roads. No way to do a burnout though. It's manually operated so driver controlled.
