Exclamation Temp gauge

My temp gauge is not working and engine light on. Did a reading on it and the only thing that came up was the temp sensor. So I bought a new temp sensor and installed it but gauge and engine light still on. Any advice please appreciated. Thanks.
2001 3.8 5 speed.

There are several trouble codes related to the temp sensor. What was the code that was set?

Sorry I had missed a wire connection. The wire connecting to sensor wasn't fully connecting. Laughing at myself now. Thanks.. I had just finished doing a complete overhaul rebuild of my engine due to spinning a bearing. Going for inspections tomorrow. Thanks for all the help and advice. Very much appreciated.

But I do have another issue though. My speedometer wasn't working before and still isnt. Any tips. So that way I don't have to use my phone for speed

The transmission has a variable speed sensor which generates an AC voltage that is sent to PCM for calculating the speed of the car. The PCM then sends a signal to the speedometer to display the speed. There are trouble codes for these kind of situation too. The sensor could be at fault or there is a problem in the wiring, so check your connections and harness for damage. The factory service manuals have a troubleshooting chart for these kind of problems and you can download a pdf copy of the 2000 manual here. The 2001 service manual is not available, but the 2000 is the same information. Depending on your electrical skills, it may help with diagnosing the problem.
