Is this a trick question? You disconnect the wires, disconnect the slip joint under the hood and unbolt it from the dash? I have not done a 96Z but I have done dozens of others, it normally a pretty simple process.

Slip joint is somewhere between the rack and the column. It is best to remove the column side of the slip joint, unless you are some sort of sadist that loves extra work and more pain. What the tohers have said about the removal process is pretty much it, you may have a cable running from the column to the gear shifter that will need to be removed before you can get the column out. I cant remember if the 4th gens have it or not. I know my 99 did not but the early ones may have had it.
