Starter problem - Shimming?
 

Ok so had to replace starter on my 94 camaro- LT1 motor auto trans. Problem is the start is loose- I can push it up 1/4''. Bolts are tightened all the way too. Seems I would need shims or a spacer on top of the starter? When I push it up it seems the gear for the starter would hit the flex plate. Also it makes a loud screeching noise when going to start

Are you sure you got the right starter? Did you compare the two nose housing pieces to make sure they are the same, and that the new one isn't shallower?

I got one of ebay said was for my year camaro and lt1 5.7. So yea Im guessing I got the right one ill check out the link

You can guess you ordered the right one based on application, but did you receive the right one?
Having the bolts tight, with the starter still being able to slide up 1/4", is more than just a shimming issue. I'd want to compare the two starters side by side. Oh, and don't try starting the engine till you get it sorted out, you could chew up the teeth on your flexplate.

yea the flex plate was already missing a few teeth. Did that before I blew my head gaskets. Sooo not sure how that happened was starting fine then one day it made a loud screech and killed a few teeth. Did these cars come shimmed at all?

what is the numbers on the starter you got, link us to the starter. if the bolts are bottomed out you stand a chance of breaking one off or stipping the threads.

Sorry Ill have to get a number later. I added some shims/washers to the bolts then put them through the starter so it would tighten it down. Turns over well with out any noise so far.

Sounds like the mounting area of the new starter isn't as tall as the old one, leaving your bolts too long.
As long as the starter works without making any grinding sounds...it would make a bad noise if too tight or too loose.

yea thats what I figured. Should of compared them side by side before I installed it. Thanks for the help!
