Is SS and Z28 the same thing?

Is SS and Z28 the same thing?
For many of you, this might be quite a silly question. I was wondering if SS and Z28 were the same thing? What's the diffrence between them? What did the RS package include? Can you provide me with the options they came with on a 1997?

RE: Is SS and Z28 the same thing?
depends.
a LS1 Z28 and SS are the same except for some apperance stuff baiscally.
a LT1 and SS are a little different, not much. but some of the SS's in the LT1 body style(93-97) had LT4 corvette engines, meaning they were better than a regular Z28.
a RS is a v6 package in 96 and 97, and i think 98, not sure about 98 though. it went through 02, but after 98 or 99, it was a "visual package" not a RS package.

I see. Thank you very much for your input.
Does that mean they made a Z28 SS 1997 Camaro?, or would the "SS" not be mentioned? Are all V8's classified as Z28's? And what exactly did the SS package come with?

in 1997.. they had i think ~350 LT4 camaros. which were rated at 305HP and 335TQ i beleave. the base model Z28 was 275HP and 305TQ, the SS was rated for 285-290HP and 310TQ. there was also the 35th anniversary edt, which was basically all apperance. in 97, there was also 3.8 RSs, which were a 200-210HP v6.
my HP numbers mite be a little off, but thy are good for comparison sakes. but i beleave they are relatively close anyway

all v8s are either Z28 or SS. certain ones where SSs. all LT4s were SSs, no LT4 was a Z28, but, there was some regular LT1 SSs.
IMO, i wouldnt worry about looking for a SS, unless your willing to spend a few bucks more. i'd just look for a regular Z28.

The 96-97 SS camaros were still LT1's . They were not LT4's.98-2002 SS camaros are LS1's.

RE: Is SS and Z28 the same thing?
AAAHHHH SOOO MUCH CONFUSINGLY TWISTED INFORMATION!!!
The LS1 SS's have the same HP as a Z28, they have a minor suspension package and visual package. Other than that it becomes car specific because there were many options.
LT1 Z28's have the same thing, a minor suspension package and appearance package. They tend to make a bit more HP because the intake on a stock Z28 is extremely restrictive. Regular Z28's and SS's from 96-97 have the LT1, only in 1997 did they make 100 30th Anniversay Special Edition SS's with the LT4.
