Default It smells like gas in here!

It smells like gas in the car when:
-the windows are down moving or stopped (by far the strongest smell)
-stopped with windows up and air blowing (very slight, almost no smell and intermittent at times)

I can not smell gas in the car when the windows are up the air is blowing and I am moving down the road.

Background on the car- has recently had the fuel pump replaced and it did not smell like gas in the car ever before it was replaced. This is the second time it has been replaced. The first time the hatch mod was used and did not smell like gas in the car afterword. It's a 3.4 1994.

I haven't noticed any leaking fuel anywhere. Help.

It is either a leak or a EVAP (vent) issue.

You can remove the whole floor from inside the and sit on the gas tank and you should not smell gas.

If i remember right there is a passanger compartment vent in the driverside rear wheel well which is right next to the lines and evap system. That vent is ment as a exit when the AC is on based on the manuals air flow diagram. It makes sence that with the air on that vent becomes exit only.

open up the hatch and see if all is good, you have a vent hose thats got a release valve on it to release pressure from the tank if it builds up and the evap is not compensating. it should be on the front driver side of the tank on the underside. make sure its there and connected to its hose.

if you overfill your tank you can soak the charcoal in the evap canister and that can smell but should all the time outside the car.

is it only smelling when the engines running?

How do I get to that vent hose? Just follow the fuel lines back to the tank?

Oh if you mean the hatch to the fuel pump. The shop used some sort of epoxy to close it. Not bolts.

check/test the gas cap. look for any damp areas, gas will most likely not make it to the ground if its not running out. i thought you did the install, they glued it shut,,, well now that was stupid,,, i would call the shop and let them know theres an issue and there install may be leaking gas.

the relief valve is under the car, as you look at the tank from under the car it should be strapped to the front driver side corner of the gas tank.

I couldn't find any damp areas under the car so I pried off the panel to the trap door and it looks like there is gas on top of the tank (damp). Fired it up and didn't see anything leaking but the smell did get more intense.

It appears as though they didn't clean up the spilt gas from taking the pump out to replace it. I'll try cleaning it up and see if that helps.
