It'll work. Is your car an auto or manual? If you have a manual I wouldn't do the swap. If you have an auto then you most likely have the same gears so you'd be gaining disc brakes and possibly posi. But if its not a posi system it's not worth the effort.

I thought the 3.08 rear ratio for A4's was for those with the y87 package? I think standard ratio on teh A4's is 2.73 with 3.08 being the performance option offered for the auto and its included in the y87 pkg on v6 cars.

He's saying that the y87 cars had the 3.08 gears for better acceleration. Most guys like to get the 3.42s or 3.73s. Some are crazy like me and get 4.10s. The best all around ratio for an auto would be 3.42s. Great acceleration and still have top speed and decent fuel mileage. But like I said earlier if the unit isn't a posi unit don't waste your time on it. You'll also want to make sure you get the brakes, park brake brackets, park brake cable, brake lines ( soft lines and hard lines). Those are all the parts you need for that diff. After that you should replace your sway bar endlinks, sway bar bushings, pan hard bushings and lca bushings. I'm not trying to scare you from this just letting you know everything you need to make it work. I did this swap from a 98 to my 96. The 98- 2002 have a different brake setup the the 93, 94-96 and the 97.

I thought the v6 cars came with 3.23s stock. Later years with the the 3.42s. Didn't the V8s come with 3.42s as well?

All A4 cars had 2.73, with 3.23 being an option (my previous posts in here seems to be wrong on the 3.08 part I believe). 3.42 was the only option for M6 cars, but it was never an option for A4 cars.

I have the A4 and the GU4 body code, so the autos could have a 3.08.
