Rear Axle Problems. What will work?
 

I have a 96 Z28. The rear end went out on it and I need to know what other years and makes will work. Im looking to get a used one. I have been told that 93 to 2001 firebird and camaro will work. I dont need the traction control option. Also what is the average price to have it rebuilt? Is it cheeper to find a used one?

You're best bet will probably be to pull one off of a 93-2002 V8 F-body in a junk yard, this ensures that you'll get a Posi rearend (which is what you have now), that way you don't have to pay for anyone to set up the gears etc, you just have to swap in the whole rear axel/dif. I don't know the cost of having it rebuilt, if you want to get some tougher components you can spend around $1500+ in parts alone to make the stock 10 bolt more robust. If you aren't planning on doing the work yourself gears are typically a more expensive repair because they have to be set up correctly and that takes some time and skill.

The Camaro/Firebird and all of their different subdivisions (i.e. SS, WS6, Trans Am etc.)are known as the F-body.

Some of the older guys can correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the 'F' in "F-body" actually came from the Firebirds. Chevy probably would have used C-body, but I believe that was already taken by the Corvette.

Edit: Sorry, I posted up some wrong info there, the C-body is actuall a larger sedan style body origionally used on the Cadillac Calais.

I called a salvage yard and he said the traction control sensors are different from 98-02 than 93-97. If I dont want traction control it shouldnt matter, right?

If you don't have TCS I shouldn't think that you would need the sensor. I'm not 100% on that though, you wait a day or so to see if z28pete chimes in, he knows all the sensors and what you need. If he doesn't chime in within a couple of days shoot him a PM.

Traction controlon 98+ carsuse wheel speed sensor for each rear wheel. Non traction control axles use only one speed sensor mounted on top of the axle by the differential. (same as93-97 ABS cars)

So I lied, it looks like you need to find a rear section off of a non TCS V8 F-body, sorry for misinforming you.[&o]

You could still use the TCS axle, but some work is needed, such as adding the ABS reluctor ring to the differential.
