Reading odb I codes with no scanner

I have heard this is possible and when you do it right the ses light is supposed to flash according to what codes are stored but apparently I'm doing something wrong because it's not working. Are there any tricks that I am missing to do this...that is if it does infact work.

1993-Back can flash codes. 94 forward need a scanner. 94 is the first year for OBD protocol. OBD is a government standard. Pre 94 was GM's own protocol.

Dang. Would one of those $30 scanners be a worth while investment? Or do the less expensive one not give enough detailed info to make them worth it.

thats probly a code reader and will not work, i dont think they make a 30 dollar scanner. only certain scanner will work on a 94. brb

did the obdII come out earlier on Camaros? I know I have used the paper clip on many gm cars 96 and back. I though 96 was the year all gm went to obdII but I guess that's not true.

If you have a pc that can be placed near the car, you can use my free scan app with an OBD1-capable cable. I can also tell you how to make a cable for under $20, so total cost is less than $20 to scan everything including the ABS and SIR.

Oops, maybe your car has the V6. There is a V6 version available also on the same site. Not as many features however.

96 was the first year for OBD2 in F-cars. Unfortunately 94 and 95 OBD1 F-cars could not use the paper clip code method.
