quick question
im hearing an noise in my rear its not with rpms it with speed is that wheel bearings or diff. making noise im gussing wheel bearings and is their a way to tell what wheel it is or should i change both bearings? thanks alot for any help.
If the noise follows speed then it is probably a wheel bearing. If the noise changes as the load changes, that is while acceleration, deceleration, or coasting, then it is probably the center section. If the noise increases during asharp left turn it is probably the right side axle bearing, if the noise increases during a sharp right turn it is probably left side axle bearing. Notice the word "probably".
I think he is refering to the differential (Pumkin)

I would still advise checking your u-joints, cheap fix if its them

Question:[/b] 1998 Chevy 1500 mileage: 173,000. When I accelerate I can hear a loud whining noise coming form the rear of the car but it stops when I take my foot off the accelerator. Also, whether I am accelerating or not, I can hear "rolling" noises from the rear. I changed the differential oil and noticed no metal filings in the differential but the gear pack in the middle of the differential did move back and forwards about 1 mm. Does this sound like differential bearings or wheel bearings or anything else?
Answer:[/b] The whining noise you described is caused by a worn ring and pinion gear in the differential. Replacing it should fix your problem.
