Old Gas Removal

1996 Z 28 LT1. Can't afford full coverage and I wont chance this car on PLPD. Trouble is, it's been over a year, and even with Sta-Bil in the tank, I don't want to let it sit another winter and try using it.

I also don't want to drop the tank, is there a way I can use the cars fuel pump and unhook the line somewhere to empty the tank? I really don't want to punch a hole in the gas tank and then have to patch it, this is a nice car.

so long as theres not a bunch of gas in the tank you can. theres a fuel prime wire coming out a wiring harness on the passenger side of the engine compartment, sorta by the oil dip stick but closer to the heater core. if you hook to positive side of battery fuel pump will come on. then youll have to unhook the fuel line somewhere. filter would probly be the best place, less stress on pump.

Sta-Bil will preserve the gas for a year. A double dose will last for 2 years. What the gas will lose though is volatility, Sta-Bil doesn't prevent that. Just add more Sta-Bil now, then more new gas when the time comes to fire it up again. Doing what you're talking about is an unnecessary effort, unless you're going to be storing the car for years and years and years.

Storing it for several years is probably what I'm looking at here.

What color is the fuel pump wire?

Something to keep in mind then, an empty gas tank can build up moisture inside it over the years, causing rust. A tank full of treated gas, won't.

Awesome thank you. Measure twice, cut once. :)

Easy as pie once you follow some good advice and simple instructions. Thank you so much. I still don't like handling an open bucket of gas...

I'll fill it back up with fresh gas and new Sta-Bil, it's off my mind now.
