Default Morning discussion

1. Could someone tell me on a Camaro 3.8 v6 (1999) when you are trying to get the car to top speed what gear is the car in (In terms of stomping the gas from start to the limiter)???

2. What the hell does the 'Rev Limiter' do???

3. Also with cruising speed in 4th gear (Automatic Final Gear), is the car reachable to the limiter than it is to Question 1???

Please just a morning discussion, out of respect of the enthusiast, please spare me of any criticism... Thank you and God Bless...

Drop a line on these though

No criticism here.. Camaro drivers are respectable and mature! lol

Anyways, alright, the rev limiter limits your revs to a point. No clue what it is cause i have yet to ever go over 4g, but once your revs get to the limiter, it will not let it rev past that point.

Yes, 4th gear in your auto could eventually get to your limiter, but you would be going pretty damn fast so i doubt you would ever get there.

As far as owning an auto, your car is designed to change gear before you max out your revs. Only just but it does... basically in a auto, the way to hit your limiter, is park or nautral and put it to the floor.. you`ll hear it.

okay thank you very much, but 1 last question... I opened the car up 3 different times each time the car gets to 3 gear @ 102 mph,and acts like the dang limiter cuts on and i know for sure i have 1 gear left (SES light flashing and everything). In this car do I need to left off the gas to try to get it to 4th gear (it hit 4th gear 1 time @ 102 mph last week, but by the time that happened i ran out of straight road) or is it not designed to get in fourth gear unless you are going at highway touring speed??? Reason Im asking is Ive owned a 02 cavalier, 01 impala 3.4, 04 impala 3.4, buick regal gs supercharged 3.8, and this car. I could never recall if they hit the final gear at the speed governor at 108 mph (all these had the same speed limiter).

hope you are on the track but...guess what???more than likely you run out of gas...meaning, unless your car was ordered from factory with 245z rated tires your fuel will cut off at approx. 115 mph.

There is a rev limiter and a speed limiter. The tranny not shifting is a pretty common issue. Its been covered here a few times and I think its in a sticky somewhere on this sight.

so basically 1 of 2 things will happen. Without the racing like tires, you probably wont get to top speed or the car is designed to just catch up with you in 4th gear doing touring speeds i.e. expressway or track until the limiter cuts on???

My 2000 3.8L has hit the 125 mark on her speedometer before.. Really though you don't need to go that fast, even corners way far away start 'flying' at you when your moving that fast!!

I agree with Cammy. I've gotten my '96 straight shift to 125 before, and that's definitely not a speed you want to go unless you're on the track with plenty of rescue personell on hand, LOL. It's amazingly fun, though :0)

As far as the rev limiter goes, I was under the impression that it only worked in neutral (or park for auto trans). I've actually never reached the point where my car wouldn't let me rev it up a bit more...

On my 2001 V6, the speed limiter kicks in at around 120. I know this for a fact.

You're electronically limited from the factory to 118 mph in the 3.8L and the 3.4L is limited to 112 mph (I think).

The only time I've ever pushed my car to high speeds was on a closed track. I hit 134 mph and was not gonna push it any farther.

The automatic shifts gears at 5900 but the rev limiter kicks at 6100.

Why are you worried about the speed and rev limiter anyhow? There's no reason you should be going that fast unless you're at a track. And the speed limiter just allows enough fuel for you to reach 118 or 112 and not a bit more. Actually once you hit that speed it will actually slow the car down to 115 unless you have the limiter removed.
