Default Mis-fire

My car is starting to mis-fire. I have a '98 v6 and I know it's most likely the spark plug wires because they're the original set.

I see them priced from $20 to $300 and I'm just wondering what should I get. Any suggestions on brands?

I went with the middle of the road cost. I didn't want the cheapest and I wont spend big bucks for brand name stuff, so I went to autozone, said what car they were for and picked the middle one out of the list that was available for my car.

I normally get mine through summit, I like there options and quality lot better then auto/advanced parts. I also would check with NAPA if you don't want to order online.

I will reserve comment about paying for a legendary name or brand name.

to the OP, with your application (six banger daily driver stock ignition) you'll be fine with whatever you buy.

But, with MSD, you get to lighten your wallet, state that you have MSD wires and they come with a neat decal so maybe there is value in that to you; only you know for certain

msd is proven, I buy them personally because they seem to last the longest on my applications.

and MSD like all suppliers also has out of box failures. I would say that it's safe to assume that not every 4th gen running has MSD wires. If you find value in them, then great.

But, they are not the end all to beat all and there are many other much less expensive alternatives which work just fine.

If you ran plug wires so long they caused a miss don't be surpised that they took the the coil packs with them. Never run wires more then 7 years. I do mine every 5-6 years. Cheap ones are better then 15 year old ones

I just want to post a quick update to my issue. I changed the plug wires out but it didn't help at all. I'm not saying the plug wires didn't need to be changed out, because they did.

The first code my car displayed was mis-fire on cylinder 5. It go worse after the new plug wires were installed. (it had nothing to do with the plug wires). My car had the same code displayed today, mis-fire on cylinder 5.

I tested the spark on cylinder 5 and it was fine. I then took out the spark plug and it was cracked. I replaced it and it runs fine now.

The spark plugs are fairly new so I just didn't expect it to be a cracked plug.
