Default Markings on crankshaft

I just installed my crank and rods in my 400 sbc. I started the torqueing sequence.....then I noticed stamped into the crank R 010 M010. Meaning of course I just installed standard sized bearing on a crank that has been turned 10 on the mains and the rod journals.......I coulda swore the machine shop said it was all standard. I guess he meant the pistons and bores were good left at standard bore. The older I get....the less I pay attention.....
I'm just wondering, I dont feel any play on the rods after only torqueing the rod caps a few lbs.... shouldn't there be some slop felt if I try to move the rod if the bearing were standard instead of 010 over?

you have to remember that .010 is not alot and it is only .005 in any one direction but as far as the engine goes it might as well be .100. Tollerances are very important to the overall function of the engine and being .010 over is enough to lose an engine fast. Have the crank rechecked for size and if the stamping is correct just order new bearings and be safe. The machine shop should remic the crank for you just to make sure. I would not pay them since they told you everything was standard size.

Not to split hairs (I don't have many to split anyway ), but the bearings would be undersize, not oversize. And good thing you noticed that now, otherwise you would have been asking why your newly built engine sounds like it has a rod knock and your oil pressure seems low!

Seems that if the machine shop removes .010 off the crank, that the bearings would be .010 thicker to make up for the removed material.

Correct, and that's what makes them undersized. Bearing dimensions go according to the opening size. And to fit a ground journal, that size would need to be smaller.

I get it......I installed the new bearings......makes me feel better having that behind me.....expensive mistake....I spoke to the machine shop.....he said he told me the crank was 10/10 but I guess I wasn't listening....again.
Next is the cam install.....It's a healthy 488/ 510 lift.....I'm hoping for a sloppy idle and big top end.
Then the noisey gears......my first engine with the gears.....i'll probrably hate them....but I still want that whine in my life!

Good thing you got that bearing deal straightened out before it was too late!
My Camaro also has a whine to it, it's when the wife is in the passenger seat and my right foot gets too heavy.

I tried to install the cam and it won't slip into the last journal.....The bolts I'm useing to guide it in are only 3 inches long and don't give me much leverage.....I don't remember any cams giving me this much hassle.
