I wanna know what engine is better, not just in hp and response to mods, but in reliability, gas milage, overall engine life, and so on.

Yeah LS1 responds better to mods and gets better fuel economy. Reliability and engine life depends on the owner in my opinion. LS1 parts are more expensive though.

well

you are asking questions about F-Bodies and to be specific, 4th generation

a platform that was offered

1993-1997 the LT1 so anywhere from 14 to 18 years ago and you are asking about reliability to people that are still running those platforms. Did I mention 14-18 years old?

Next, you inquire about another platform, The LS1 that is 9-13 years of age and again, want to know about reliability.

First, most of us are not the original owners so we have no clue about the maintenance that was performed from day one so reliability really isn't a fair question.

I have completely rebuilt the drivetrain in my 95 Z28 so it's reliable. You see, you'd be getting a skewed answer from me because engine, tranny and rear end are all rebuilt.

Both are very reliable engines. In favor of the LT1, its a cast iron block...which means it's heavier, but usually able to withstand more abuse and more horsepower. The drawbacks are obviously the opti-spark system and mechanical water pump. Parts are generally cheaper for this engine as well.

The ls-1 is a more modern engine and is by no means outdated, just out-displaced by more modern LS series motors. Upgrades are usually more expensive, the aluminum block is lighter, and although it's not cast, most engines are 6 bolt mains, which means strong durability. Greater horsepower and better fuel economy are also benefits of the LS-1 and LS series, which is why GM is still using these engines.

I am an LT1 owner and I love my motor...would I rather have an LS-1 or other LS...yes...but my LT1 is a strong, reliable motor.
