Loose steering column?
I'm looking to buy a '94 Z28 Convertible and I had it checked out by a mechanic yesterday. He mentioned the steering column was loose, I hadn't noticed that before. How serious is this? You really have to grab the wheel and shake it to notice any play. Any ideas on how to fix/how much the repair would cost? Thanks guys.
I've had this happen on other GM tilt columns (I'm assuming that it's a tilt column).
The repair usually involves pulling the airbag, wheel, lock plate, turn signal switch, and upper housing to expose the pivot point.
At that point you have to use a special tool to remove the pivot pins and separate the upper part of the column.
Then all you do is tighten the 4 screws that hold the lower plate to the column tube. Actually, the better repair is to remove each of the screws, hit it with som LocTite, and *then* tighten it and go on to the next one.
You really *need* the special Kent Moore tool to pull those pivot pins or the job is next to impossible so the shop needs to have that.
If they do it's an hour or two of labor and nothing else.
