Loose Steering Column

I have a 98 Camaro v6 5spd. The steering column is loose and it won't pass inspection. I think it is a very common problem that i have researched about Chevy’s; something to do with the bolts inside the column that need to be tightened. Is there a write up on how to do this fix on the camaros, maybe something with pics. Or anyone in the central VA area that have done it and could help. Thanks

RE: Loose Steering Column

Man I had the same problem with a 86 Chevy Pickup I used to have. Is it a tilt column? Seems like everyone was telling me it was some loose screws but once I researched it the problem turned out to be a broken pin of some sort. I actually sold the truck before I got around to fixing it but I was gonna pay someone to do it because it was such a pain to tear down without the proper tools. You might wanna check with a mechanic, it might be cheaper to pay someone with the right tools to fix it rather than buying everything you need to do it yourself. Seems like the mechanic I checked with was only gonna charge me $20.

I have fixed several of mine over the years but never with an airbag installed. Seems to me that would add a whole new dimension of pain to the job. (not that it is fun to begin with)

GM have had problems with their tilt columns since they created them. I had the problem in my 81 Trans Am.

Anybody have any links on how to tighten these loose screws?
