Default Intermittent SES Issues

So I've recently been running into the dreaded SES light. The only thing is it's very temperamental. It usually only comes on when I'm running low on gas and stay on until after I fill up and run about an 1/8th of a tank through it. I added some STP injector cleaner a few fill ups ago but I don't want to keep adding it to the fuel if it's not going to help fix the problem.

It's got about 114k miles on it and other than it taking a bit longer to turn over when I first start her up, performance is just fine (for a v6 lol).

I always make sure to never overfill the tank and I always turn my gas cap till I hear at least 4 clicks. It's the original cap, though, so after 17 years maybe it needs replaced but I just wanted to see if anyone else ran (or is running) into this issue as well before I just starting throwing money every direction but the right one.

Thanks!

should have stored codes if the ses light is coming on. have it scanned for trouble codes and let us know what comes up

AutoZone will scan your car for free. Even though the light may be off now, your system could be storing a pending code since it's an intermittent thing. Or, wait till the light goes on since it seems to go on like clockwork, and take it to get scanned.

I'll for sure have the codes read and report back. I wrote the thread while at work. When I went out to my car today to leave, it did its normal thing starting up but the SES light starting flashing. I immediately turned the car off and waited about 10 seconds and started her again. This time the SES light stayed solid my whole trip home (roughly 12-14 miles).

Has that ever happened to anyone else??

The flashing SES lamp usually indicates a serious engine misfire condition, bad enough to possibly damage the catalytic converter(s).

With it starting up and the light staying solid for the drive, does that mean it didn't misfire for that trip? Or could it still be misfiring and the light might not be indicating it? Its seems fine. I was hyper paranoid the whole drive home and didn't really notice any changes in driveability.

No,it doesn't mean that. It just wasn't bad enough to try to get your attention immediately.

Well oddly enough the light has been off consistently for the past two days. Wishful thinking, I'm sure, but could it be an issue with the electronics?

have it scanned for trouble codes. so long as you have not disconnected the battery they should be stored.
