If rear tires off the ground and put into n, will car roll ?

Need to turn the drive shaft but gear needs to be in neutral. But if I put it with rear wheels off the ground wouldnt it roll?

Thats why you chock the front wheels.

Your car auto or manual? Chock the front wheels of course. But if its an auto, putting the car into Park is keeping it in neutral I believe, so the driveshaft should spin if its not connected to the rear. You could also put the car in neutral and throw a block onto the brake pedal.

If an automatic, the wheels and driveshaft wont spin unless you have the trans out of park. Manual trans, put in neutral.
What are you trying to do anyway?

I'm trying to get to the bolts to loosen the drive shaft cuz the torque arm is in the way on the other side

So since the transmission is no way connected to the front wheels, putting the car in neural should have no effect because it's the rear wheels that lock in park and already raised?

Camaro 69 01-26-2012 10:30 AM

Correct. And as already mentioned, be sure to block the front wheels so the car dosn't roll. The rear wheels when on the ground, with the trans in park, are what keeps the car from moving. Also be sure to safely block up or use jack stands in the rear. Don't just rely on a floor jack, nobody here wants to see you get squashed.

Plus one, the seals used in any jack you would buy are sold by the pound. Probably less then 3 cents per seal. I am sure there is a chance there is no defect in it :) Jack stands should not be concidered an option they are a requirment. Once the car is on the stands I try to knock it off. Only after that do I go under.

yes the car can roll if the rear wheels are off the ground. once the wheels leave the ground it doesnt matter if its in gear of not the car can roll. as said, make sure to block the front wheels.

Im glad you dont want me to get squashed, Ive only got two jackstands and i put those in the back and use the jack to lift the front, im looking at this pinion seal and the torque arm is on one side, and the exhaust is on the other, to crack the nut is the gun required? else i might have to take out one of the two because ive got a electric impact gun that is pretty wide. on a side note, what do you all think of putting nitrogen in the tires? yay or nay?
