Horn doesn't work, but I can hear the relay clicking
 

Hi all,

Ok so my horn is not sounding. Trying to figure out why.


1. Press the horn buttons, both of them. No horn
2. Press the horn button and with hood open and fuse box open listen, hear a click from the fuse/relay when I press the horn, no horn
3. Swapped the fuse out for the next one and same result, clicking noise from the fuse but no sound from the horn.


What does this mean guys?

What should my next step be?

Check at the horn electrical connection with a test light or meter. If you get power there with the horn button pressed, the horns themselves are bad, or you have a bad connection or ground.

Thanks very much for your response. Could I have a simple step by step to check the voltage for this please? I have not done this with cars before.

I have a volt/multi meter, where do I connect the probes, what kind of numbers am I looking for etc?

Just the basic things would be helpful.

I'd have to look at a wiring diagram to see if you have only one wire to the horn, which would make the horn bolt down attachment point the ground, or if you have two wires (one power, one ground). If two wires, the (most likely) black one is ground and you can run the test meter between those two wires. If one wire, connect the test meter to that and the other probe to a good ground source on the body or frame.

Ok thanks very much. So just to confirm

1. Find the horn, I know where it is
2. Disconnect the connector to the horn
3. If theres two wires then touch the two probes of the multi meter to the wires, within the connector am I supposed to put the probes?
4. Get someone to push the horn buttons and then see if there is a voltage reading on the meter?

You got it. Should have 12 volts, or thereabouts.

Just to ask. I had the cd player changed for an aftermarket one a few weeks ago. Is it possible that they accidentally disconnected something when they did the change?

They accidentally disconnected the traction control and fog lights but I noticed the day after and then they fixed it. I dont use my horn ever really so it may not have been working since they worked on the cd or it could be unrelated.

Is there a connector behind the cd player area or is it nowhere close do you know?

The fact that you can hear the horn relay click though, makes me think the problem may be more towards the front, either the horns or wiring. One horn or two, I never payed attention (nor had problems) when I had my 4th gens? Would be weird for two horns to go bad, but not impossible over time.

OK I went under the car and removed the panel under the horn, and found the existing connector to be rusted so i removed the horn and fitted a new one i bought. Works great and it beeps when I lock and unlock it now which is good to know it is locked.
