the above is called a contradiction
if you want performance, then don't buy the sixer. Can I be more clear about that?
Sure, you can drop money trying to add performance..........but why? If you haven't already bought the car, and are already asking about "more pep" then it's not the car for you.
Yes I know that v8 versions cost more...............and your question about "more pep" explains why?

If it is the orginal top it is going to need replaced. Forget any repairs for small rips. None of the pros will touch a 15 year old top. Infact most will not touch a top more then 5 years old. They shrink and become prone to tears. A good top will last 10 year, factory tops are not good tops. If it has been garage kept it will still look ok but is will all but fall apart.
There are downsides to convertibles. Convertibles are like swimming pools, on a nice day everyone want one but year round they are a pain.
3800 is a very dependable motor, the intake gasket may need done if it has not been done but other then that they are very solid motors. Of course they have to be maintained. The motor will respond well to CAI, headers and cat back. Your not going to keep up with the V8s but your not going to have all the V8 headaches either.
