sounds like the sending unit is failing. may be worth it to jack it up and support with stands and get under there to check out the wires and the connector. let us know what you find either way and we'll go from there.

Like Craby said it is usually the sender that causes this. The wires can get hot from the fuel pump and will from time to time melt the connector. Most of the higher end fuel pumps like the Airtex and Carter will come with a new harness to replace the old one with. Unfortunatly the new sender only comes with a pump and that will run you around $250. It is not a hard job to do but I believe unless you cut an access hole you will be needing to drop the rear axle to drop the tank.
