Front engine oil leak

Hello. New member here. I have a 96 Z28 with 160,000 on the LT1. Lost the water pump and replaced it and the optispark. I thought I was careful but this was my first try at this. The engine got a little hot when the water pump failed but not totally overheated. When I start the car and run it for 5 to 10 minutes, oil starts leaking down from above the front seal. I am guessing either the opti drive or maybe the waterpump shaft. Anyone suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Chinook311

I have a feeling you may not have installed the water pump seal correctly. It shouldn't leak if done right, but it's a little tricky and the exact procedure seems to be a well kept secret.

Could be either one, did you put new seals in after replacing the pump?
This is from http://www.malcams.com/legacy/misc/autorebuild.htm
WATER PUMP DRIVE SHAFT
Be sure to check the seal surface on the geared shaft that drives the water pump. If it’s grooved, it will leak and it will be your fault. New ones are available from GM (p/n 10219554) for around $40. That’s cheap insurance when you consider that the timing cover, chain and gears have to come off to replace it.

these guys are probly right but just in case check the front of the intake manifold. the rvt seal there is prone to failure.

you understand that the seals are not the little rubber o-rings?????????

I did not see in your post that you said you replaced the seals.
